Netflix recently launched an app called “Game Controller” on the iPhone and iPad, which is an important step for it to enter the field of cloud gaming. Today, the company revealed more about how the app will be used and its testing plans in a blog post.

Netflix said they will conduct a limited test with select TV users in Canada and the United Kingdom, and in the coming weeks on PCs and Macs via supported browsers on the Netflix.com website. On TVs, games can be played through the “Game Controller” app on phones, and PC and Mac users can play games on Netflix.com using a keyboard and mouse. Netflix added that this limited test is to test their game streaming technology and controllers before the game platform is officially launched.

Here is a list of some smart TV platforms that are compatible with Netflix:

  • Amazon Fire TV Streaming Player
  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • LG Tv
  • Nvidia Shield TV
  • Roku devices and TV
  • Samsung Smart TV
  • Walmart ONN

Apple TV did not appear on this list because of Apple’s hostile policy towards cloud games. Apple must protect its App Store revenue stream, and allowing cloud gaming apps to appear on iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs threatens the App Store’s cash cow: mobile gaming deals.
