According to the report, Netflix has 4 subscription plans, including the entry-level plan for watching ads, and 3 ad-free subscription services: Basic, Standard and Premium.

Netflix has announced that it is canceling its “basic” subscription in Canada, meaning that users who do not want to watch ads will have to pay to upgrade their subscriptions, which is a price increase in disguise. Netflix said the measure is only for new members, but will not affect existing members who use the subscription plan.

Netflix emphasized that existing subscribers with the “basic” subscription package will not be able to re-subscribe to the plan once they cancel. Netflix has not yet responded to the question of whether the strategy will spread to more countries. Canada was also one of the first countries to be affected by Netflix’s crackdown on home-sharing accounts. Therefore, Netflix is likely to continue to promote this strategy.

The new Netflix subscription plans are as follows:

  • With ads: $5.99 CAD per month (currently about RMB 33)
  • Basic: Cancelled and no longer available for new members, existing members are not affected, $9.99 per month (currently about RMB 55)
  • Standard: $16.49 per month (currently about RMB 91)
  • Premium: $20.99 per month (currently about RMB 115)
