Nanxin Technology launched the PFC control chip SC3201: supporting full-power PD fast charging

With the popularity of 100W high-power adapters, high switching frequency, high power density, and high efficiency require a better flyback architecture. For some medium and high-power chargers and adapters with a power greater than 75W, power factor correction (PFC) is usually required, which also drives the market demand for corresponding PFC controllers, inductors, rectifiers and filters.

Southchip announced the launch of a new generation of PFC control chip – SC3201, which can meet the requirements of medium and high power chargers and adapters for power factor and input current harmonics. It has core technologies such as no need for auxiliary windings, integrated THD optimization, and support for segmented output. Southchip SC3201 adopts the SOT23-6 package, VDD supports 9-30V, SC3201 not only supports multiple protection measures such as VFB overvoltage protection, VDD Undervoltage protection, cycle current limiting protection, ultra-high temperature protection, but also supports the second independent overvoltage, Undervoltage, overcurrent protection. The chip can be widely used in USB-PD chargers, AC-DC adapters, LED drivers, industrial power supplies, power tools and other fields.

Southcore SC3201 PFC controller can be combined with high-frequency QR controller SC30xx series and synchronous rectifier controller SC35xx series to form a complete solution of 80W-160W.

Taking the 100W adapter design as an example, using the complete set of SC3201+SC3057+SC3503 solutions, high PF value and high efficiency can be obtained in the full input range. The full-load efficiency of the whole machine can reach 94.3%, and the efficiency value of 92.3% can still be achieved at the minimum input voltage of 90Vac; in the whole voltage range, the PF value is above 0.9.

Not only is the circuit layout more complicated, but product development is relatively difficult and the cost is relatively high. Afterward, the industry began to try to integrate GaN power devices, PWM controllers, and drivers into one package to achieve a highly integrated GaN packaged chip design.
