Chipmaker MediaTek has become a major player in the smartphone, tablet and Chromebook markets in recent years, and now it looks like the company wants to expand its presence in the e-reader space as well.
E-paper display maker E Ink Yuantai Technology announced “enhanced cooperation with MediaTek” to jointly develop chips for e-book readers using E Ink displays.
The announcement was not specific but noted that MediaTek’s chips can support devices with black and white or color e-ink displays.
MediaTek’s e-reader solution combines one of the company’s system-on-a-chip solutions designed specifically for tablet PCs with hardware timing controllers from Yuantai Technology.
The announcement also mentions details about MediaTek’s current e-reader solution: the MT8113 processor, the chip used in Amazon’s Kindle Scribe device with a 10.3-inch E Ink display and support for stylus input, but Amazon and MediaTek have not previously shared many details about the processor.
Note: According to the E Ink press release, the MediaTek MT8113 uses a 12nm process, comes with a dual-core 2GHz CPU, supports LPDDR4 memory and has integrated support for Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth, and can last up to 10 weeks or more in standby mode.
