Microsoft’s Skype reported a 74.5% drop in revenue and a 93% drop in profits over a decade

According to French technology media L’Informé, Skype, Microsoft’s communication application, has seen a sharp drop in revenue of 74.5% in ten years. The report pointed out that Skype’s total revenue in 2013 was 722 million US dollars, and its total revenue in 2022 dropped sharply to 184.3 million US dollars.

In its latest quarterly earnings report, Microsoft said consumer demand for Skype had dropped significantly, suggesting users were making significantly fewer calls using the platform.

What’s more, the platform’s annual profit also suffered, dropping from $90.8 million to $6.35 million. This equates to a 93% decline over nearly 10 years.

Microsoft is also updating the Skype app with native support for M1 Mac devices in the latest release, version 8.94.76.302. The response time of the new version of Skype adapted to the M1 chip is about one-third of the previous version. The response time of the old version is around 200ms, while the response time of the new version is around 70ms.
