Microsoft Xbox chief product manager: TV is the key to mainstreaming cloud gaming

On August 24, Cologne, Germany opened this year’s Cologne International Game Show (Gamescom 2022). In this year’s Cologne Gamescom, Microsoft Xbox chief product manager Harrison Hoffman (Harrison Hoffman) talked about the future of cloud gaming in an interview.

According to GI.biz today, Hoffman believes that while bringing a lot of games to mobile devices is one of the main attractions of cloud gaming, it’s playing cloud games on TVs that will be key to mainstreaming cloud gaming. He said in the interview, “Different people have different preferences, and certain games lend themselves to being played on smaller screens, but one of the reasons I’m excited about Xbox’s TV app is that our games can really shine on the big screen, and these games are made for the big screen.”

The announcement comes after Microsoft released its Xbox TV app with Samsung, which is currently only available on Samsung’s 2022 TVs. Because these TVs have only been available for eight months, the Xbox TV app has fewer users.

People are used to watching movies and TV shows through streaming platforms like Netflix or Disney +,” Hoffman said. We wanted to give users the ability to play games via streaming in the same way as they would watch a movie on Netflix. That simplicity is what’s needed for cloud gaming to become mainstream.”

At the same time, Hoffman believes that Xbox cannot attract players only through the game console and PC, Xbox needs to lower the threshold of the game and enhance the appeal by developing cloud games.

This year’s Cologne Game Show, Xbox showed off the actual experience of its TV app. At the same time, Hoffman said that although the TV on display was connected via a network cable, Xbox has completed most of the testing of wired and wireless connections, and Xbox will gradually enhance the user’s cloud gaming experience.
