Microsoft tests Xbox app for Windows handhelds, introduces compact mode

Microsoft is releasing a new Xbox app for Windows to Xbox Insiders who have signed up for the PC Gaming Insiders preview to improve the experience on handheld devices and smaller screens. The version number is 2311.1000.41.0.

Microsoft has introduced a new compact mode that greatly shrinks the sidebar on the left, aiming to improve “the experience on handheld devices and small screens.” It’s a relatively minor UI change, but it works really well on a device with a 7-inch display in a handheld like the ROG Ally.

Comes with new features:

  • Refresh the UI in the installation queue
  • Updated buttons, fonts and game channel styles
  • Improved notification UI, including the option to show only unread
  • Compact mode for apps improves experience on handheld devices and small screens
  • Improved controller navigation throughout the application

Early “Windows Handheld Mode” concepts leaked from an internal Microsoft hackathon project earlier this year, including a floating taskbar, an improved game launcher, and changes to the Xbox app.
