Microsoft Surface Duo phone transforms into a Windows 11 PC

0

The dual-screen folding phone Microsoft Surface Duo originally ran the Android system, but a developer previously created a project that allows users to replace the Android system with the Windows 10 or 11 system. In this way, users can experience the functions and interface of desktop computers on their phones. Recently, the project released a new driver version, bringing some improvements and new features.

It is noticed that the developers of the project released the version 2308.12 driver on GitHub. This version updates Qualcomm’s drivers, including Adreno 640 graphics processor, Aqstic audio, Atheros wireless network card and Bluetooth, Hexagon subsystem manager and FastRPC bus, etc. Additionally, this release addresses some system stability and security issues, such as fixing blue screen errors when installing Windows updates, adding support for Secure Boot signature exclusion database (DBX) and BlackLotus mitigations and improving the Compatibility of Windows Core OS products. Most notably, this version also supports the Miracast function, allowing users to wirelessly project the phone screen to other devices.

Although this project has made great progress, it is still an experimental project with many defects and limitations, and only those users who dare to replace the original system with a desktop system can try it. For example, the on-device speakers don’t work, issues with the brightness control, charging is choppy (and won’t charge when using Windows), and more, the developer has a list of known issues on GitHub.

It’s also worth noting that build 2308.12 is only available for first-generation Surface Duo phones. While it’s technically possible to run Windows 11 on the second-generation Surface Duo 2 phone, the project is a barely working proof-of-concept for the device.
