Microsoft Outlook for Android / iOS to support multi-factor authenticator

Microsoft plans to add a new non-email-related feature to the Outlook app on mobile devices, according to a new entry in the Microsoft 365 roadmap. The feature, called “Authenticator Lite,” will allow users to sign in to their work or school accounts without having to download another app.

The Authenticator Lite authenticator feature allows users to complete multi-factor authentication for their work or school accounts using the Outlook app on their iOS or Android devices.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a basic security feature that helps customers protect their identity online by adding an additional layer of protection. MFA requires two or more forms of authentication — for example, one-time passwords, physical security keys, SMS text message authentication and more — before access to a particular account can be granted.

Microsoft already offers a dedicated Authenticator app for iOS and Android, and it’s available for free in the App Store and Google Play Store. But millions of Outlook users will be able to enhance the security of their accounts without having to download additional software. Microsoft says “Authenticator Lite” will be fully available on Android and iOS in March 2023.

Despite the simplicity of multi-factor authenticators, many users still find them to be cumbersome solutions. Integrating MFA functionality into Outlook will help make multi-factor authentication easier and more accessible.
