Microsoft is improving quality of graphics and audio drivers for Windows 10 and Windows 11

Panos Panay, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief product officer, made a commitment at the Computerx conference last May that maintaining the high quality of Windows 11 was a top priority for the company. Although Panay did not specify the details at the time, it is predictable that Microsoft is improving the reliability of Win11.

Garrett Duchesne, Microsoft’s lead program manager, recently published a technical community blog post outlining the latest improvements the company has made to its audio and display driver evaluation.

The new driver evaluation solution will reload events in the Software Digital Rights Management (SWDRM) catalogue, which helps with issues related to driver timeouts encountered when playing software DRM content in other streaming applications such as Netflix.

In this blog post, Microsoft explains that

"While mfpmp.exe is loading the installer, devices that are reloading events in the Code Integrity category may receive timeouts from other applications such as Netflix. This 'device-based' approach is used to detect this.

When playing video on Windows devices, DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology (software or hardware) will be used. We use the set of all devices that have SWDRM playback as our sample location to calculate the percentage."

In addition to this, the company would like to better address the issue of audio processing objects or APO (software-based digital signal processing) crashes, as the current method usually causes audio crash measures to fail for a period of time when drivers are committed. This is explained in the document titled “Percentage of computers with at least one APO disablement in the last 7 days”.
