Microsoft is fixing a kernel bug in Win11 22H2 file copying

Microsoft recently released a new Windows 11 Beta 22621.900 that adds new OneDrive notifications, fixes high CPU usage, and more. Windows 11 Dev Preview 25252 adds virtual private network status, a new taskbar search style, and more.

In addition to the new features, Windows 11 Preview 25252 also fixes a major bug in Windows 11 22H2 that caused significant speed drops when copying large files remotely.

“Fixed an issue where network-to-local copying (for example, when copying files from a network share) was slower than some users expected.”

While the issue was initially suspected to be related to the SMB protocol, Ned Pyle, lead program manager for Microsoft’s Windows Server High Availability and Storage group, later confirmed that it was a problem somewhere in the kernel and “had nothing to do with SMB or compression.” As a result, local file copying speeds were also affected, and some users also reported that performance was affected much more severely than initially thought.

Ned Pyle said the fix will subsequently be rolled out to all users as a cumulative update, and reiterated again that the issue is not related to SMB.

“A permanent production channel fix will come in the normal monthly cumulative updates after this issue has been validated. As previously mentioned, the fix is not related to SMB and since it is not a component I manage, no further rollout timing details are available.”

File copy performance degradation isn’t the only thing Microsoft has fixed recently. Microsoft also addressed a bug that caused a performance drop in games in the Windows 11 2022 update.
