Microsoft improves OneNote security protection, prohibits running 120 file types

Microsoft recently announced that it has raised the security level of OneNote to block 120 file types such as .bat, as well as office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Microsoft OneNote previously opened file types such as .bat with a warning dialogue box informing users that opening the attachment could damage their data. However, users still had the option to open embedded files that were marked as dangerous.

With the introduction of security improvements, users will no longer have the option to open files with dangerous extensions. Microsoft will pop up one, informing users that “Your administrator has prevented you from opening this file type in OneNote.”

Microsoft said the change will begin rolling out in Current Channel (preview) version 2304 of OneNote for Microsoft 365 on Windows devices between late April 2023 and late May 2023.

This improvement is also available in the Current Channel for Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016 retail versions, although it is not available in volume-licensed versions such as Office Standard 2019 or Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021.
