AMD is helping Microsoft develop its own in-house AI chip, code-named Athena, Bloomberg reported Friday. This is part of Microsoft’s multi-pronged strategy to secure the supply of artificial intelligence processor chips.
According to reports, hundreds of employees within Microsoft are working on the project, and the company has apparently invested about $2 billion into its development.
However, Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw denied this statement, “AMD is a good partner, but they are not involved in the plan (referring to Athena).” This is in line with industry sources received by analyst Dylan Patel.
Currently, Microsoft’s U.S. stocks are quoted at $310.65 per share, with a market value of $2.31 trillion, an increase of about 7.35% in the past month.
AMD is currently trading at $89.84 per share, with a market value of $144.589 billion. Although there has been a slight increase in the past few days, it is still far behind the 52-week high of $109.57.
