Microsoft announced Radius an open-source platform for cloud-based-apps

Microsoft has just released a new open source-based software platform designed to help developers and enterprises create, deploy and manage cloud-based applications. The platform is called Radius, and it comes from the Microsoft Azure Incubation Team.

Microsoft described the goals of Radius in a blog post:

Designed to fit in, rather than disrupt, existing development tasks and CI/CD pipelines, Radius is dedicated to helping developers better understand all the components that make up their applications and handle platform configurations such as permissions, connection strings, etc. to simplify their Task. As a result, operators can ensure that all applications are deployed in compliance with organizational policies and then use Radius to manage the applications and their resources.

Microsoft gives an example of how Radius works with applications that use the Mongo database:

With Radius, developers can model Mongo resources in their applications and use their connection strings during development and testing phases. When it comes time to deploy in a production environment, developers can exchange application resources by simply changing the application definition connection to a service such as Azure CosmosDB or AWS DocumentDB that has been provisioned by the operator. In other words, changes to the supporting infrastructure for an application in Radius no longer require application code or configuration changes.

The first version of Radius will of course support Microsoft’s own Azure cloud platform, but will also support private clouds and Amazon Web Services. In future versions of Radius, support for other cloud services, including Google Cloud, will be added. Microsoft is also working with other companies like BlackRock, Comcast, and Millenium BCP to ensure that applications managed through Radius can work with any cloud service.

It is noted that Microsoft has also established a Radius GitHub page for developers, providing code and documentation, and has established a Discord community channel so that Radius developers can communicate with each other about the work of this new platform.
