Microsoft admits problems with Windows 10/11 remote connection feature Direct Access

Microsoft has recently admitted that there are problems with Direct Access, a remote connection feature in Win 10/11 systems. 2019, Windows Server 2019/2022.

Microsoft describes the issue as, “Using Direct Access connections on affected systems may fail after ‘temporarily losing network connectivity or switching between Wi-Fi networks or access points’. This issue can also occur after installing the October update or a newer update on affected systems.”

Microsoft also noted that devices using other remote connectivity solutions such as VPN and Always on VPN should not be affected. Most home devices are also unaffected by this issue since they are used primarily for remote access to an organization’s network resources for direct access.

Microsoft says the issue can be resolved using Known Issue Rollback, and that devices that are not yet under management may take up to 24 hours to get an update. Microsoft also said that restarting the device may help solve the problem. Devices that are included in enterprise management will not automatically receive a fix, and administrators will need to install and configure special policies to resolve the issue on these devices.

Any Group Policy information about the issue can be found on the official support page provided by Microsoft, and for information on all policies affected by the issue, you can jump to the Windows 11 Version 22H2 support page for access.

Direct Access, sometimes referred to by Microsoft as DirectAccess, is a network technology that supports remote connections. It enables Windows users to access an organization’s network resources without using a VPN connection.

Remote clients always connect to the organization through Direct Access. Microsoft recommends using Direct Access only on Windows devices running versions of Windows prior to Windows 10. on Windows 10 and later, Microsoft recommends that organizations switch to Always on VPN.
