Microsoft 11 began rolling out File Explorer tabbing feature preview

0

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced many new features for Windows 11, including direct selection text operations in Teams, File Explorer tab support, and more. The new tabbed File Explorer has been used for testing, but most users are still waiting.

“Tabs integration is one of the most important feature updates to Windows File Explorer in years. The interface to File Explorer has remained largely unchanged since the release of Windows 8, and with the next update to Windows 11, Microsoft is adding tabs and a new Home home view to change File Explorer.

The “tabs” integration allows users to work more easily on multiple folders and directories, and the new Home view of File Explorer can also view recently used files, including documents and pictures from OneDrive.

Microsoft has begun rolling out the File Explorer tabbing feature to Windows Preview users as the company prepares for the fall 2022 release. However, it has not yet been officially released to the production channel.

Reports indicate that Windows 11 version 22H2 will be released in late September 2022, with a wider rollout planned for October-November. For now, it appears that Tabbed File Explorer will not be included in the next feature update release.

In fact, the RTM build of Windows 11 22H2 currently lacks tabbed support for File Explorer. After the release of Windows 11 version 22H2 in September, Microsoft may plan to turn on the tag set functionality in File Explorer through an upcoming cumulative update.

This means that tag support for File Explorer will arrive at a later date, probably in October or November.

Recent changes to File Explorer
In the meantime, Microsoft has fixed several File Explorer glitches and taskbar error bugs in the latest Windows 11 Dev preview release. It also fixes an issue that caused the left half of the File Explorer title bar to be impossible for some users to drag with the mouse or touch.

These fixes work with the tabbed File Explorer and are available to preview users in the Dev channel.
