Micron Launches 6500 ION Data Center SSD: with 232-Layer NAND and 30.72 TB Capacity

According to Micron, the 6500 ION SSD for data centers is now available. Officially, the Micron 6500 ION is a high-capacity SSD. Since Micron uses a 232-layer technology node, which is superior to competitors’ QLC technology below 200 layers, the 6500 ION SSD can provide TLC performance while being comparable to the cost of QLC.

According to Micron, the Micron 6500 ION is a high-capacity SSD with higher performance and better cost performance:

● 34% reduction in average read latency

● Sequential write performance increased by 58%

● Up to 62% increase in 4KB random read IOPS

● When the queue depth (QD) is 128, the 4KB random write IOPS is increased by more than 30 times; when the QD is 1, the 4KB random write IOPS is increased by more than 10 times

● 4KB random write endurance (RDWPD) improved by more than 10 times

In addition, Micron also introduced a new XTR SSD. Micron XTR SSDs are extremely durable and provide the reliable cache necessary for write-intensive workloads.

● Random disk writes per day (DWPD) up to 35 times, sequential DWPD up to 60 times. Endurance levels far exceed traditional SSDs

● Up to 35% random DWPD endurance at 20% cost compared to SCM SSDs

● Up to 44% lower power consumption

● 20% increase in usable capacity

It is learned from Micron’s official website that Micron’s 6500 ION SSD has a capacity of 30.72TB and is available in U.3 (15mm) and E1.L (9.5mm) specifications. Micron XTR is available in U.3 (15mm) form factor and is available in 960GB and 1.92TB capacity options.
