Micron 9400 NVMe solid state drives (SSDs) are now in mass production and available immediately through channel partners to meet global OEM customers’ needs for the highest server storage performance.

The Micron 9400 SSD is designed to manage the most demanding data center workloads, especially artificial intelligence (AI) training, machine learning (ML) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, said Micron. The SSD features up to 30.72TB of storage capacity and a 77 percent increase in read and writes operations per second (IOPS). The Micron 9400 is also the world’s fastest shipped U.3 form factor PCIe 4.0 data center drive, with consistent low-latency performance across all capacity sizes.

With 30TB of capacity, the Micron 9400 SSD is twice the maximum capacity of the company’s previous generation of NVMe SSDs. A standard dual-rack, 24-drive server with a 30.72TB Micron 9400 SSD can have a total storage capacity of 737TB. doubling the capacity of the Micron 9400 SSD means that enterprises can cut the number of servers in half while maintaining the same amount of data storage.

In terms of performance, the Micron 9400 SSD achieves 1.6M IOPS for 100% 4K random reads and writes, and for mixed read and write workloads, the Micron 9400 SSD performs at

  • 71% increase in IOPS for 90% read and 10% write workloads to over 1 million IOPS
  • 69% improvement in IOPS for 70% read and 30% write workloads, exceeding 940,000 IOPS

In the test scenario, the Micron 9400 SSD performed in mixed workload performance as follows

  • In the RocksDB test scenario, the 9400 SSD improved performance by 23% and workload responsiveness by 34%.
  • In the Aerospike database (an open-source NoSQL database optimized for flash storage) test scenario, the Micron 9400 SSD improved its peak performance by a factor of 2.1.
  • In the NVIDIA Magnum IO GPUDirect Storage (which supports direct memory access data transfer paths between GPU memory and storage) test scenario, the Micron 9400 SSD achieved 25% better performance than the competition in compute task-intensive systems.
  • In the multi-tenant cloud architecture test scenario, the Micron 9400 SSD delivered more than twice the overall performance of competing performance SSDs and reduced response time by 62% compared to the competition.

Micron 9400 SSD increased IOPS per watt by 77%, resulting in lower overall power consumption. The Micron 9400 SSD features 176-layer TLC particles, a U.3 form factor, backward compatibility with U.2 slots, and capacity options ranging from 6.4TB to 30.72TB.
