The MG Comet EV is the second electric car from MG in India, starting at Rs. 798,000 (currently about RMB 67,591), making it the cheapest electric car in the country.

Positioned as a small urban speedboat, the MG Comet EV features a two-door, four-seater design and can travel up to 230km on a single charge. For comparison, the Tata four-door Tiago electric model has a range of 250-315 km and starts at Rs 849,000, while the Wuling Air EV four-seater version currently starts at Rs 76,800 in China.

According to publicly available information, “Comet” comes from the iconic British aircraft that took part in the 1934 British-Australian MacRobertson Air Race, while Marque’s previous Hector and Gloster were also named after British aircraft from the Second World War. MGCC expects 25-30% of its Indian sales to come from electric cars by 2023.

The car looks like the sister brand Wuling Air EV, with a length, width and height of 2974/1505/1640mm and a wheelbase of 2010mm, exactly the same dimensions as the Air EV’s four-seater version.

This model is equipped with a 14.3kWh battery with a maximum power of 42PS (about 31kW) and a maximum torque of 110N・m, providing a range of 230km. The Air EV four-seater version has a 28.4kWh battery, 50kW of maximum power and 140N-m of maximum torque, and a CLTC range of 300km.

It does not support fast charging, with an estimated charging time of 7 hours (0-100%) for the 3.3kW, or 5.5 hours if it only charges to 80%.

The MG Comet EV is also said to be equipped with i-SMART and internal internet capabilities, putting it well ahead of the market in this segment.
