According to Bloomberg Local Times United States, a number of writers recently filed a lawsuit with the New York federal court, accusing Meta, Microsoft and other technology giants of unauthorized use of their works to train AI models.

The writers’ group filed a proposed class action copyright lawsuit on Tuesday, alleging that Meta and Microsoft used the controversial “Books3” dataset to train their big models, telling them how to respond to human prompts and commands.

Writers’ groups claim the “Books3” dataset contains thousands of pirated books.

Meanwhile, AI research organization Eleuther AI has also received allegations that it allegedly provided tech companies with datasets used to train big models, including “Books3”.

According to the report, “Books3” contains the text of thousands of books from “shadow libraries,” which the authors’ group claims were misused as part of the dataset to train the Llama 2 big model developed by Meta and Microsoft. The Llama 2 model was developed in collaboration with Meta and Microsoft. The writers’ group has filed for damages and an injunction against the misuse of their work, as the companies have “illegally extracted significant value” from the authors’ books.

17 authors, including the author of Game of Thrones, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI late last month, accusing the company’s AI program ChatGPT of “large-scale systematic theft” of their copyrighted works, one of a series of recent legal actions by writers against AI infringement.
