MediaTek launched two new entry-level Kompanio chips, the 520 and 528, which will be available in entry-level Chromebooks in the first half of 2023.

The chips are said to bring enhanced performance and longevity to entry-level Chromebooks. It is designed to allow consumers to seamlessly browse, cloud games, stream, and use Google Play apps on their laptops without worrying about battery life.

The Kompanio 520 and 528 chips are essentially upgraded versions of the existing Kompanio 500 SoC, and both new chipsets offer an octa-core CPU that includes two large Cortex-A76 cores and six A55 cores that bring 2GHz and 2.2GHz main frequencies.

They also come with an upgraded dual-core GPU and are optimized for power consumption to provide longer endurance.

Both chips also bring a host of new features, such as 32MP shooting support, and are backed by MediaTek’s hardware image engine, as well as better low-light shooting and support for VP9 decoding and H.265 encoding, which delivers a 2x performance boost in this area. In addition, there is an ultra-low power HiFi-5 DSP to handle audio data.

These chips can also support dual-screen displays, supporting 60Hz FHD (1920 x 1080) external display. MediaTek says users can also connect to a projector or smart TV depending on their preference.

In addition, the Kompanio 520 and 528 chips include MediaTek’s Filogic Wi-Fi 6 solution, which supports 3733Mbps of LPDDR4x RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage.
