According to the latest research report released by Strategy Analytics, the total revenue of smartphone applications processors (AP) was $8.9 billion in 1Q 2022, an increase of 35% year-on-year. According to the list, the top five are Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple, Samsung LSI and ZTE.

Here are the main points of the report

"● Qualcomm leads the smartphone AP market with a 45% revenue share, followed by MediaTek (25%) and Apple (22%).

● AP shipments with 5G modules accounted for 53% of total smartphone AP shipments in 1Q2022.

● Top-selling Android AI APs include Dimnesity 700, Snapdragon 778G, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 810, Dimensity 900, and Snapdragon 888/888+.

● 80% of smartphone APs shipped in 1Q 2022 were made by TSMC. Snapdragon flagship chips are strong, but Samsung Foundry lost share due to weak Exynos shipments.

● Smartphone APs made in 7nm and below process nodes accounted for 48% of total smartphone AP shipments in 1Q2022.

● Current market demand for low-end smartphones is weak. The agency believes inventory absorption will occur in 2Q2022 as suppliers continue to reduce inventories.

● New entrants Google and JLQ Technologies (a joint venture between Leadcore and Qualcomm) will ship less than 1 million APs combined in 1Q 2022. On the other hand, Hysis' shipments dropped to near zero."

Sravan Kundojjala, author of the report and Director of Mobile Component Technology Services at Strategy Analytics, commented.

"Qualcomm's flagship 4 nm-based AP Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 gained strong traction in the first quarter of 2022. The company's increased share of Samsung Galaxy S devices drove its smartphone application processor (AP) revenue to a record high.

Qualcomm is well positioned to address China and macro issues with its high-end and high-end 5G APs, which are in high demand from Android smartphone makers. Samsung's Exynos AP shipments are down" by 40 percent in the first quarter of 2022 as Qualcomm's competition from Samsung Mobile intensifies. However, mid-range APs such as the Exynos 1280, which the company uses in its high-capacity Galaxy A series devices, are showing signs of recovery.

MediaTek and Unisoc both posted impressive results in Q1 2022. MediaTek's Tiangui 9000 high-end AP got off to a good start, but shipped just under 1 million units in the quarter. However, the company's growing focus on the high end could help it withstand mid-range weakness in 2022 and help it maintain ASPs. on the other hand, Unisoc gained significant share in 4G APs, thanks to the increased attractiveness of Tier 1 design wins."
