Mazda’s rotary engine officially returns with the first MX-30 extended-range version

Many people like Mazda because this car company rarely follows the trend, but has its own persistence. For example, in terms of rotary engines, it is stubborn. It announced last year that the rotary engine will officially return, and it will be the first to be installed on the extended-range version of the MX-30 in the future, which may be unveiled in March next year.

The Mazda MX-30 range extender will be equipped with a hybrid system consisting of a rotor engine, electric motor and battery pack, in which the rotor engine will only be used as a generator and the vehicle drive will be completely handed over to the electric motor, while the large-capacity battery pack will provide pure electric driving power.

From the picture, the relatively compact structure of the rotor engine makes it more space-saving compared to the reciprocating piston engine, which means that the rotor engine can have a more flexible and free mechanical layout, and is also beneficial in terms of weight reduction.

In fact, as early as 2017, Mazda had applied for a rotor extended-range hybrid system, and the information shows that this front-drive layout of the extended-range hybrid system has the electric motor arranged in the front axle, the battery pack is arranged in the middle of the chassis, while the internal combustion engine, generator, fuel tank and inverter are arranged in the rear of the body.

The car is driven by the battery and the electric motor. When the battery pack is low, the rotor engine will fire and drive the generator to generate electricity, which is fed into the battery pack through the inverter for the purpose of charging the battery pack.

The MX-30 is Mazda’s first electric car, but its battery pack capacity is only 35.5kWh, but also only 200km, so the extended range has become the biggest consumer expectations, it is understood that Mazda hopes that through this system, the MX-30 range from 124 miles (200km) to 248 miles (400km).
