Linux patch hints at L4 cache for Intel’s Meteor Lake processors

0

It is well known that Intel is preparing its 14th generation processors, some of which will be mobile sku with Meteor Lake architecture in Foveros package.

Intel’s latest Linux patch submission hints that Meteor Lake will support L4 cache, which is really rare in processors. “On MTL, GT can no longer be allocated on LLC — only the CPU can. This plus support for ADM / L4 cache together is called a MOCS / PAT table update.”

Of course, we’re not sure what the “ADM” in the patch stands for yet, and the code doesn’t expose the size of the ADM. We think it may just be a marketing term for L4 cache.

In retrospect, Intel has included 128MB of eDRAM for the initial 14nm Broadwell (i7-5775C and i5-5765C, essentially the 14nm version of Haswell), which can be used as the L4 cache for the CPU. In addition, some of Intel’s Coffee Lake-U processors also have 128MB of eDRAM cache.

Of course, Intel has only adopted this design in a few of its chips for NUCs, as the L4 cache is slow, so it is difficult to get a system performance boost other than with integrated graphics.

During the Hot Chips 34 demo, Intel shared the schematic of Meteor Lake, which will use Intel 4 process and external process and introduce the first “Tile” design with four different parts: CPU, SOC, graphics and IOE.

So, the base part of Meteor Lake may contain L4 cache, like Ponte Vecchio’s 144MB L2 cache, but we’re not sure where it will be placed yet, but Intel seems to have planned to prohibit Meteor Lake’s iGPU from accessing the LLC (Last Level Cache), only the CPU part can, so it’s definitely not the graphics part. not the graphics part.

In short, the design is similar to AMD’s Ryzen APU, whose CPU core and iGPU cache are not shared, which means its core graphics will be more dependent on high-frequency dual-channel memory.

According to SquashBionic, the MTL-S supports DDR5-6400 memory, but it depends on the exact configuration of the die. He says: the current engineering sample MTL-S (6+8) supports 5600 MT/s, while MTL-S (6+16) supports 6400 MT/s.

In addition, according to @9550pro, it seems that Intel’s new Meteor Lake series can only be used on low-voltage platforms, at least this year’s new desktop processors and the HX series processors for mobile platforms are still the Refresh versions of the 13th generation Core Raptor Lake, and only next year will new motherboard + new architecture CPU products appear. Of course, both are called 14th generation Core.

In terms of process, Intel announced that Intel 7 process has been mass-produced, Intel 4 production is ready, and with the launch of Meteor Lake, Intel 4 production capacity will be enhanced in the second half of this year. In addition, the Intel 3 process is progressing on schedule, and test chips for the Intel 20A and 18A processes are already flowing.
