The Linux Mint team has shown some new notifications and tooltip topics in early May, and made some explanations for the release schedule; it also announced that there is a problem with secure boot. complete with a startup.

The Linux Mint team has yet to announce plans for Linux Mint 21.2 and LMDE 6, but both are close. LMDE is the abbreviation of Linux Mint Debian Edition, and new versions will be released after the main version of Debian. Debian 12 will be released in June, so LMDE 6 will follow.

According to the blog post, LMDE 6 will be released after Linux Mint 21.2 (Note: The official EDGE ISO version adopts Linux kernel 5.19), roughly estimated to be released in June. Linux Mint releases usually follow a 2-week beta period.

In recent years, the Mint team has focused on modernizing the Cinnamon desktop that comes with Linux Mint by default. In May of this year, the team decided to showcase new tooltips and notifications using user-chosen accent colors, an enhancement that gives users more control over their desktops. However, some visually impaired users disliked the change, saying the text was too difficult to read, according to the blog’s comments section.

One user complained about the new notifications and tooltips and suggested making them optional.

Finally, for users planning to install Linux Mint, it is recommended to turn off Secure Boot. Canonical has updated Ubuntu’s shim-signed package, which supports Secure Boot, and now Ubuntu derivatives cannot use Secure Boot. The Linux Mint team is working on a fix for a future ISO, but for now just disable Secure Boot.
