As the data recording capacity of smartphones, action cameras and portable game consoles continues to grow, consumer demand for ultra-large SD memory cards is at an all-time high. The latest news is that Kioxia, one of the world’s leading storage solutions providers, has just announced a working prototype of the industry’s first 2TB microSDXC UHS-I memory card, featuring the company’s innovative BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory + self-developed master control.

Although the SD Association set a maximum capacity support limit of 2TB for the SDXC specification more than ten years ago, no manufacturer has come up with a 2TB version on the market.

Now, Kioxia has designed 16 1 Tb-capacity 3D flash memory chips together using the company’s proprietary manufacturing technology.

The chip mounting area has a maximum thickness of 0.8 mm, making it still ideal for high-volume data logging applications.

Finally, if all goes well, Kioxia plans to start mass production of 2TB microSDXC memory cards in 2023.
