2024 iPhones may get under-display selfie camera and Face ID

The first iPhones featuring a UD selfie camera and UD Face ID will debut in 2024, claims popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In addition, the planned upgrade serves more as a marketing ploy than a solution to any underlying technical issues. Under-display cameras are still in their infancy. As of now, current implementations have poor image quality and aren’t a viable replacement for the traditional cutout method.

When it comes to graphic quality, the UD selfie cameras are always going to be at a disadvantage compared to normal cameras. Due to the additional layer on top, less light enters the sensor. Therefore, the ISP and its remedial algorithms are essential in preventing this phenomenon. To counter that, we’ll be eager to see if Apple has come up with fresh and innovative technology. We’ll have to wait another 17 months to find out the results, which is a bummer.

In related news, Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for Apple, has released a new iPhone 14 prediction, this time focusing on the phone’s selfie camera. New iPhones will include Autofocus front-facing cameras with an f/1.9 aperture. Four new iPhones set to release later this year. The sensors will now capture more light thanks to the wider aperture. This should lead to better daytime and low-light photos and video calls. When using Portrait mode, the inclusion of autofocus will enhance subject tracking. It will provide depth of field in both stills and video footage.

Apple will predictably unveil the iPhone 14 series in September. The company is set to release four new iPhones. The release will expectedly not include ‘Mini’ model. Rumours are going on regarding release of four models including Phone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. If so, release will take place later this year.
