IEA: Global sales of electric vehicles to exceed 10 million in 2022, led by China

According to the “Global Electric Vehicle Outlook 2023” report just released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global sales of pure electric + plug-in hybrid vehicles exceeded 10 million last year, an increase of 55% over 2021, of which China’s sales accounted for 60%.

This figure exceeds the total car sales in the entire European Union (about 9.5 million) and is almost half of the total car sales in China in 2022.

It is said that there will be more than 26 million electric vehicles on the world’s roads in 2022, a 60% increase from 2021.

The International Energy Agency predicts that global sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach nearly 14 million in 2023 and the penetration rate can reach nearly 20%. This explosive growth means EVs’ share of the overall car market has risen from around 4% in 2020 to 14% in 2022, and is expected to rise further to 18% this year, according to the IEA’s latest forecasts.

According to the report, China is the “leader” in terms of electric vehicle sales, and sales of new energy vehicles in China will account for 60% of global sales in 2022. Today, more than half of the electric vehicles on the world’s roads are in China.

Europe, the world’s second-largest market outside of China, will see electric vehicle sales grow by more than 15% in 2022, with more than one in every five cars sold being electric. Beyond that, U.S. electric vehicle sales are expected to grow by 55% in 2022, while the rest of the world is also showing “signs of hope.”

Referring to previous reports, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers shows that in 2022, my country’s automobile production and sales will be 27.021 million and 26.864 million, a year-on-year increase of 3.4% and 2.1% respectively; among them, the production and sales of new energy vehicles will be 7.058 million and 6.887 million respectively. , respectively increased by 96.9% and 93.4% year-on-year, and the market share reached 25.6%.
