With the continuous development of AR technology, many manufacturers have launched their own AR headset devices. After the growth in the first two years, the AR headset market may shrink this year. Yesterday, data analyst IDC released the latest analysis report on the AR headset market, which pointed out that AR headset devices need a few years to further develop.

IDC expects the global AR headset market to see shipments fall 8.7 percent year-over-year to about 260,000 units by the end of 2022. The report notes that while the decline may seem sudden for a new technology like AR, AR headset device shipments have actually been declining in recent quarters due to the precarious financial situation of some headline companies, a lack of new devices, and consumer demand being met in the short term by AR on cell phones.

Although the AR headset market shrinks in 2022, the AR headset market will continue to grow in the future, with 4.1 million AR headset devices shipped by the end of 2026, as IDC expects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 70.3 percent over the next five years. The earliest point at which AR headset devices are expected to become mainstream is late 2024 or early 2025.

In the first half of the year, the top five AR headset device manufacturers were Microsoft, Rokid, Shadow Creator, MAD Gaze and RealWear. However, with more and more manufacturers entering the AR headset market, as well as Apple and Meta and other technology giants’ attention to AR, the market landscape of AR headset will change significantly in the future.

Strategy Analytics reports that the consumer AR endpoint market revenue size tripled between 2020 and 2021. nreal is an early leader in this field, with its shipments reaching 75% market share in 2021 and rising to 81% in the first half of 2022.
