According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Motor stated that it will cooperate with South Korean scientific research institutions to develop a development model of the mobile robot “Rover” dedicated to lunar exploration, and it is expected to launch an official product in 2027.

Judging from the concept image of the mobile robot “Rover” for lunar exploration announced by Hyundai Group, the overall weight of Rover is about 70kg. It will consist of upper and lower parts, equipped with solar self-charging system and Hyundai’s unmanned driving technology. The upper part is responsible for performing detection on the surface of the moon, while the lower part as a drive system will be developed into a platform that can walk freely on the surface of the moon.

Hyundai Motor stated that the goal of Hyundai Motor is to expand the field of human mobility experience and contribute to human progress. And expect to complete the research and development model as early as the second half of next year, and launch a formal product that can detect the surface of the moon in 2027.

Hyundai Motor signed a contract with six scientific research institutions including the Korea Astronomy Research Institute, the Korea Electronics and Communications Research Institute, the Korea Construction Technology Research Institute, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, and the Korea Automotive Research Institute in July last year. A joint research cooperation agreement (MOU) for the development of a dedicated robot for lunar exploration was signed. After discussing with all parties, Hyundai Motor defined the production purpose of the robot as “landing on the south pole of the moon to perform scientific tasks such as mining and environmental exploration.”
