Huawei announces the renewal of patent cross-licensing agreement with Nokia

Huawei and Nokia announced the renewal of their patent license agreement. It is reported that the cross-licensing terms will not be further disclosed due to the confidentiality clause.

Previously, Huawei and OPPO announced the signing of a global patent cross-licensing agreement, which covers essential patents for cellular communication standards, including 5G standards. Huawei has also entered into cross-licensing agreements with Samsung Group for their respective standard-essential patent packages.

Huawei said, “Usually large vendors are both rights holders and users, so licensing between large vendors is usually cross-licensing. In a cross-licensing agreement, each party receives a patent license from the other party, and which party ultimately pays a net license fee to the other party depends on the value of the patents and the market conditions of both parties.”

It is reported that about 350 million 5G cell phones and 15 million connected vehicles are expected to be licensed by Huawei in 2022; about 30 million broadband access terminals for home users will be licensed, accounting for 45% of the world’s data communication connections licensed by Huawei.

Huawei currently holds about 10 percent of 4G patents worldwide, about 20 percent of 5G, Wi-Fi 6 and H.266 patents, about 30 percent of OTN and 10G PON patents, and about 20 percent of IETF patents.

In 2022, we signed more than 20 new or renewed license agreements in the areas of smartphones, connected vehicles, networking, and the Internet of Things,” Huawei said. In the field of connected cars alone, we have entered into licenses with about 15 car companies, providing advanced patented technologies to well-known car companies including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Renault, Suzuki, Lamborghini, Subaru and Bentley.”
