HTC Vive VR headset to be sent to ISS to test stress relief for astronauts

HTC VIVE officially announced today that it will send an adjusted microgravity-friendly version of the VIVE Focus 3 VR all-in-one machine to the International Space Station during a NASA supply launch scheduled for November 7.

Once there, Danish astronaut Andreas Morgensen will test the viability of VIVE Focus 3 for relieving mental stress. These mental stresses come from the “lack of privacy, high frequency and variable workload, and separation from loved ones” inherent to working in space.

HTC has partnered with XRHealth, a virtual reality therapy company, and aerospace research and development company Nord-Space ApS to develop a “virtual assisted mental balance program” to try to meet the unique needs of astronauts.

It is learned that HTC launched VIVE Focus 3 in July 2021. The official website price is 10,688 yuan. It is positioned relatively high-end and is mainly aimed at enterprise users.

In September 2022, HTC announced the launch of the VIVE Focus 3 “Eye Tracking Suite” and “Expression Detection Suite”, which will greatly enhance the realism of human-computer interaction in the virtual world.
