HP recently pushed firmware update, causing printers using non-original ink cartridges to brick directly

0

According to feedback from many netizens in the Reddit community, the HP printers they used recently received an update push. Because they used third-party ink cartridges, they became unusable after the update.

The culprit behind the “bricking” of these printers using third-party ink cartridges is HP’s Dynamic Security feature, which detects whether the printer is using genuine ink cartridges.

HP’s official explanation of the function is: “Dynamic Security communicates with the printer through the security chip or electronic circuit on the ink cartridge. HP uses Dynamic Security to protect the quality of customer experience, maintain the integrity of our printing system, and protect our intellectual property”.

HP introduced Dynamic Security in some printers in 2016 and was hit with a class action lawsuit in 2018 and paid millions of dollars.

Reddit community user grhhull wrote in the post: “HP has pushed an update for many printers to completely prevent users from using non-genuine ink cartridges. You can’t perform any printing tasks until you insert the original ink cartridges. After contacting HP, the reply I got It was caused by a recent update.”
