Honda’s aircraft business subsidiary — Honda Aircraft Company (hereinafter referred to as HACI) in the 2023 U.S. Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition of the media day held a press conference and officially released the new light business aircraft named “HondaJet Echelon”.

Echelon” refers to a trapezoidal flight formation that is aerodynamically efficient and saves energy. Echelon also has a derivative meaning of “select category”. The name reflects HACI’s vision of the business jet of the future: efficiency first, comfort always.

The HondaJet Echelon (formerly known as the HondaJet 2600 Concept), which will make its debut in 2021, aims to realize non-stop flights across the American continent and support single-pilot operation, with the intention of reducing operating costs and enhancing the flight experience for users, IT House learned.

In addition, the HondaJet Echelon’s avionics system will be electrified and automated to optimize the driving experience, reduce the burden on pilots, and improve operational safety.

HACI earlier disclosed plans for the commercialization of the HondaJet Echelon and announced a list of key suppliers. As the development of the HondaJet Echelon progresses, HACI has made another key announcement:

  • The first structural test facility for the HondaJet Echelon is operational.
  • HACI has completed the conceptual design phase and Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of the aircraft.
  • On August 30, 2023, the HondaJet Echelon’s Advanced Systems Integration Test Facility (ASITF) was officially launched.
  • The detailed design phase is underway and a full aircraft Critical Design Review (CDR) is expected next summer.
  • Long lead time manufacturing tasks are already underway.

The HondaJet Echelon will be manufactured at HACI’s existing facility at its headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina. Initial manufacturing of the first aircraft is expected to begin in mid-2024, with the first flight scheduled for 2026 and airworthiness certification expected to be completed in 2028.

The HondaJet Echelon has a maximum crew of 1 crew + 10 passengers, 2 crew + 9 passengers, an MBAA IFR range of approximately 4,862 kilometers, a maximum cruise speed of approximately 833 kilometers per hour, and a maximum cruise altitude of approximately 14,326 meters.
