According to foreign media reports, people familiar with the matter said Google has made progress in developing data center chips, a development that means the company could start using the new chips in 2025, a key effort in the company’s quest to beat its rival Amazon Cloud Services (AWS).

Google’s server chip design team is currently developing two ARM-based 5nm server chips, according to foreign media reports. Among them, Maple is based on chip maker Myman Technology’s existing design to build, just completed the design and handed over to TSMC for trial production, while Cypress is an in-house design developed by a team based in Israel.

Foreign media reported that Google’s custom server chip is expected to be mass-produced in the second half of 2024 and will be deployed in data centers as early as 2025.

News of Google’s progress in developing data center chips comes as the company is competing with Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

After spending billions of dollars on AI R&D and acquisitions, Google has been upstaged by U.S. AI research firm OpenAI over the past quarter.

OpenAI’s new AI chatbot tool, ChatGPT, has been a recent hit, gathering more than 1 million users in less than a week since its launch. Two months after its launch, it reached 100 million monthly active users, faster than TikTok or Instagram.
