Google’s Android earthquake early warning system was questioned

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in Turkey on February 6 this year. The epicenter was located near the southern city of Gaziantep and another 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred 9 hours later.

According to an investigation conducted by the BBC, during the earthquake, Google’s Android earthquake warning system did not work properly, and many Android users reported that they did not receive notifications.

Note: Google officially stated that the Android Earthquake Early Warning System can notify users 1 minute before an earthquake occurs.

The BBC interviewed hundreds of users in three cities in the quake zone in Turkey, but none reported receiving the notification.

Micah Berman, Google’s product manager in charge of the system, responded later: “We are very confident that we can remind users to evacuate before the earthquake occurs,” but did not provide sufficient evidence.
