Google Pixel 7 Pro: Tensor G2 is like an Exynos 2100 skinned

Google launched its latest generation of flagship smartphones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, last week, bringing very strong and interesting imaging performance, but both phones seem to be lacking in other areas, especially performance.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro has now passed a series of hands-on tests with games such as ProtoGod, and this reviewer found the flagship’s performance to be really unimpressive, even going so far as to say that Google should be ashamed of itself for releasing a skinned version of the Exynos 2100 at the end of 2022.

According to up owner @GoldenHairReviewDog, the Google Pixel 7 Pro’s real-world performance in games is not even close to that of the 2021 flagship Snapdragon 888, and somehow even worse than the Snapdragon 870-powered Poco F3, not to mention the Apple A15 / A16, Dimensity 9000, and Snapdragon 8 / Plus Gen1.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro averaged 37.2 FPS. In comparison, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max averaged 58.4 fps, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra 57.7 fps, the Redmi K50 Pro 52.9 fps and the aforementioned Poco F3 46.5 fps, making the Tensor G2 the worst-performing flagship of its generation. While not guaranteeing high performance, the Tensor G2 doesn’t even guarantee consistent performance output for users, with the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Tensor G2 performing poorly in all conditions, dropping from 59 fps to around 40 fps 30 seconds into the test, which is not as good as the Snapdragon 888, which drops in frequency as it plays.

It’s not as good as other flagship SoCs in terms of performance, it’s not as good as a sub-flagship platform like the Dimensity 8100 in terms of heat and efficiency, and it’s not as good as other chips in terms of stability. The result is clear: Google’s Pixel 7 series phones aren’t great for gaming, at least for now.
