Google launched the Project Starline project a few years ago with the wish to allow people from all over the world to communicate “face-to-face”. At the I/O 2023 developer conference, Google once again demonstrated the latest developments in the project.
The Project Starline prototype has been iterated to be smaller and smaller. Previous prototypes required hardware such as infrared light emitters and special cameras, which required a large room to accommodate them.
Project Starline uses “advanced artificial intelligence to build realistic models of people,” which are then projected onto light-field displays. This combination provides projected image depth, creating a “lifelike image”, just like chatting face to face.
