Google is expected to open support for the Ultra HDR format

Blogger Mishaal Rahman recently published a post on the X platform, claiming that Google is expected to open Ultra HDR format support for Android third-party applications shortly. The relevant formats will be integrated into the Camera Take high dynamic range photos in JPEG_R format.

However, the only devices that currently support taking Ultra HDR format photos are Google’s own Pixel 8 series phones (Samsung Galaxy S24 series phones can only view Ultra HDR format photos for the time being), so there are certain challenges in the related format ecology.

It was previously reported that the Ultra HDR format is a new feature brought by Google to the Android 14 operating system. Photos taken with the Ultra HDR format enabled will be stored in 10-bit high dynamic range. Due to the need for hardware support, the initial launch is limited to Android flagship models. Officials have previously confirmed that Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and subsequent chips support Ultra HDR format photo shooting.

Google hopes that the Ultra HDR format will become the default format for the system’s built-in camera application and third-party camera applications. The Google Android team has cooperated with Qualcomm and other companies last year to make other devices compatible with the Ultra HDR format.
