According to technology podcast Dwarkesh Patel reported, Google DeepMind artificial intelligence lab co-founder Shane Legg in a recent interview, still believes that by 2028, researchers have a 50 percent likelihood of achieving human-level artificial intelligence (AGI). This prediction was publicly announced on his blog in late 2011 when he predicted trends in AI over the next few decades.

Legg said he started following AGI in 2001 when he read The Age of Spiritual Machines, a book by another Google AI leader, Ray Kurzweil, which predicted the future of superhuman intelligence. and the amount of data in the world will also grow exponentially for at least a few decades. Combined with the technology trends of the time, such as deep learning and other methods, Legg believes that AGI is possible within the next few decades, as long as “nothing crazy happens, like a nuclear war”.
When asked where we are on the road to AGI, Legg said he thinks computing power is already at the level needed to make AGI a reality, and that the “first step to unlocking it” would be to “start training models on a scale of data that exceeds the scale of what a human can experience in a lifetime,” which would be the first step to unlocking AGI. The “first unlocking step” would be to “start training models with more data than a human can experience in a lifetime,” which is something he believes the AI industry is ready for.
However, Legg also reiterated his personal position that he only believes there is a 50% chance that researchers will achieve AGI by the end of this decade, “which I think is entirely possible,” he said, “but I wouldn’t be surprised if it hasn’t happened by then. “
