Google Announces IDX Project, AI-Enabled Dev Environment with Cloud VMs

Google today unveiled the “Project IDX” project, officially announced that this is a blend of AI technology code editor.

Quoting Google project description, the official said developers are currently facing a pain point is that it is difficult to configure the technical environment and stack to run a particular project.

Developers who want to switch from desktops to laptops need to synchronize versions, and there may be problems with inconsistent behavior of some code on the two devices.

Google’s Project IDX program hopes to alleviate this problem by seamlessly integrating key technologies, based on Code OSS (an open source version of Microsoft’s VS Code), meaning developers can get started quickly.

Project IDX runs on a Linux virtual machine in the cloud and provides templates for frameworks such as Flutter, Angular, React, and Next.js, and allows developers to freely configure them to meet individual development needs.

Project IDX integrates a live preview of your application as it runs. Currently, this is limited to previewing web apps, but it will soon be extended to Android emulators and even iOS emulators.
