On Sunday local time, industry insiders revealed that Google Korea recently sent emails offering severance packages to employees targeted for layoffs on a case-by-case basis.

In January, the chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, said in a memo to employees that the company would cut 12,000 jobs. Google said at the time that the layoffs were global and would immediately affect U.S. employees. On January 18, Google rival Microsoft announced that it would cut 10,000 jobs by the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2023.
Korean media pointed out that Microsoft Korea, which had 475 employees at the end of last year, also began to reorganize last month. Between last month and this month, about 20 employees were interviewed to receive severance packages, which included up to 24 months’ salary as compensation, depending on years of employment.
