0

The GNOME team finalized the release of GNOME 44 on March 22nd of this year. GNOME is a desktop environment for mainstream GNU/Linux distributions and is another major version update to the GNOME 40 series.

The GNOME team has announced the release schedule for GNOME 44: GNOME 44 Alpha – 2023.

  • GNOME 44 Alpha – January 7, 2023
  • GNOME 44 Beta – February 11, 2023
  • GNOME 44 RC – March 4, 2023
  • GNOME 44 Stable – March 22, 2023

According to the release schedule, GNOME 44 Alpha will be released today, while the stable version will be released in late March. GNOME 44 introduces many improvements, and from the screenshots, it looks like the Epiphany (GNOME Web) web browser has finally been ported to GTK 4.

The old Gedit text editor will apparently also make a return, mainly because it is being actively maintained these days. In fact, Gedit 44.1 is available for download on Flathub, with an improved status bar and the ability to expand or collapse items with the left and right buttons in the File Browser plugin.
