General Motors to Invest $650 Million in Lithium Americas to Develop Lithium Mine

0

The Wall Street Journal reports that General Motors will invest $650 million (currently about RMB 4.394 billion) in Lithium Americas and will co-develop a large lithium mine in Nevada.

In a joint statement Tuesday, the two companies said they will develop the Thacker Pass mine. It is the largest known lithium mine in the United States and one of the largest in the world.

Lithium Americas estimates that the lithium extracted and processed at the mine could support the production of up to 1 million electric vehicles per year.

The two companies expect to begin production in the second half of 2026, with GM receiving exclusive rights to the first phase of production through a binding supply agreement, with a right of first refusal for the second phase of production.
