GM will sell a total of 2.2 million vehicles in the U.S. in 2022, a 2.5% year-over-year increase, allowing it to overtake Toyota and regain the top spot in U.S. auto sales for the year. Of the 2.2 million vehicles, 623,261 were sold in the fourth quarter of 2022.

According to foreign media, GM’s largest sales volume is its popular Chevrolet brand, which sold 413,560 vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2022, followed by GMC (143,645 sales), Cadillac (39,135 sales) , Buick (26,921 sold).

Currently, GM’s mainstays are large, gas-guzzling pickup trucks and SUVs. Over the past year, the company sold more than 1.1 million midsize pickups and full-size trucks, including SUVs, which account for nearly 50% of its total annual sales.

While GM becomes the largest U.S. automaker in 2022, it lags both traditional and emerging rivals in electric vehicle sales. To this end, the company plans to launch more electric models and accelerate the production of electric vehicles to accelerate the transition to electrification.

In November 2022, foreign media reported that General Motors plans to launch more than 15 pure electric models based on the Ultium platform in China by 2025 to catch up with the leader in the world’s largest electric vehicle market. The company said it will produce 1 million electric vehicles a year in China by 2025.

Previously, the company had said it would produce 400,000 electric vehicles for the North American market between 2022 and the first half of 2024, a slower timeline than previously forecast. In addition, the company plans to accelerate electric vehicle production in North America and China from 2023 to 2025.
