Gears of War series rumored to get Master Chief collection treatment

It seems like Microsoft is doomed after the announcement of the delay of both Starfield and Redfall. But Microsoft may have one card left to play. Reportedly, the company is giving the Master Chief collection-type treatment to the Gears of War trilogy and the remastered collection will be announced in the E3 this year.

Recently, on the XboxEra podcast, Nick Backer said, “Remember there was a rumor mill a while back where I said that there is another Microsoft franchise that’s getting the Master Chief Collection-type treatment? I am of the belief that that is coming this year.” Baker didn’t clarify the name of the series, at first. Although he did mention the Gears series later, also the YouTube timestamp is labeled “Oh, Gears Collection?”

The first Gears of War trilogy was developed by Epic Games. After that, the Coalition took over and they are responsible for Gears 4 & 5. Early in 2021, the developer studio announced that they are switching to the new Unreal Engine 5 and not to expect any announcements for some time. If the next Gears game is that far away, then a remastered bundle would be an excellent way to fill this void. Similar to what Master Chief Collection did for Halo Infinite.

The first game of the Gears of War series has already been remastered. It was released in 2016 with the name Gears of War Ultimate Edition. This game is still available on the Microsoft Store but Gears of War 2 & 3 are both unavailable on Windows. It’s a shame for PC gamers because the Gears of War 2 is hands down one of the best games ever. Although Gears of War 3 didn’t quite match the pace, it still ended the trilogy on a high note.

Gears 6 is coming for sure and it was one of the listed games revealed after the Nvidia GeForce database leak. The list was pretty big and alongside Gears 6, it included big titles like Crysis 4, GTA Trilogy Remaster, Street Fighter 6, and PC versions of both God of War and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. Gears of War Collection wasn’t on the list but some of the titles were hidden behind codenames. Either way, everything will be cleared on June 12 during the not-E3 show.
