Fujitsu develops optical transmission technology, data transfer up to 1.2Tbps

On September 9th, the Japanese IT services company Fujitsu (Fujitsu) on the official website introduced its development of new optical transmission technology, the technology can achieve a data transfer rate of 1.2Tbps, equivalent to the transfer of data in six Blu-ray discs with a capacity of 25GB per second.

Fujitsu said the new optical transmission technology mainly applies three Fujitsu self-developed proprietary technologies, which are digital coherent optical transmission technology, water-cooling technology for optical transmission equipment, and optimization of optical network technology using machine learning. Among them, digital coherent optical transmission technology is a coherent reception method that uses the characteristics of light waves to improve reception sensitivity combined with advanced ultra-high-speed digital signal processing to maximize transmission performance and is the key to the solution.

At the same time, the use of optical transmission equipment and water-cooled cooling technology can significantly improve the efficiency of heat dissipation, reducing power consumption to only 120mW per 1Gbp of data transmitted. Fujitsu said that the new optical transmission technology can reduce CO2 emissions by 70%.

Fujitsu plans to commercialize the optical transmission equipment in the first half of the fiscal year 2023 and begin offering it to customers around the world.
