Firefox for Android opens support for desktop extensions

Mozilla recently issued a press release announcing that it will expand support for the Android version of the Firefox browser on addons.mozilla.org (AMO) in the next few months.

Mozilla said it will announce the exact launch date in September this year, and said it will allow the Android version of the Firefox browser to use desktop extensions before the end of this year.

Mozilla said that in the past few years, the development of Firefox for Android has focused on core functions and only supports a small number of extensions.

It is learned from the press release that Mozilla believes that the infrastructure of the Android version of Firefox has been basically stable after years of development, and the next step is to open the extension system to meet the individual needs of mobile users.

Giorgio Natili, director of browser engineering at Firefox, said: “The mobile browser space can unlock a lot of creative potential. Mozilla wants to provide the best support for developers so that they can build web extensions suitable for the mobile era.”

Firefox will be the only mainstream Android browser to support an open extension ecosystem, Mozilla said.
