Firefox 109 released, extensions can be enabled by default Manifest V3

Following the release of Google Chrome 109 last week, Mozilla today launched Firefox 109, the first version of the web browser in 2023, which has also caught up with Google’s Chrome in terms of version.

Firefox 109 does not add many new features, this update is mainly to support the extension of the default enable Manifest V3, while the new “unified extension” button.

The Manifest V3 claims to be more capable of improving security, privacy, and browser performance and will limit the functionality of extensions, especially those designed to monitor, modify, and interact between the browser and the websites the user visits. However, compared to Manifest V2, Google’s changes in Manifest V3 are said to be mainly aimed at combating ad-blocking extensions on websites, and extensions can no longer load-scripts.

Some of the changes in Mozilla Firefox 109 are as follows.

  • Spanish (es-ES, es-AR) version of the spell checker has a built-in dictionary
  • Support for end-of-scroll events
  • Support for browser import from Vivaldi, Opera GX
  • Picture-in-picture now supports subtitles from HBO Max
  • The default content security policy for the Manifest V3 extension has also been updated.
  • As part of the Manifest V3 changes, a new “Unified Extensions” button has also been introduced
