Elon Musk hints: Tesla cars may run a smaller version of AI assistant Grok

0

An artificial intelligence company led by Elon Musk released its first product – an intelligence assistant called Grok. Elon Musk hinted that Tesla’s cars might run a smaller version of Grok natively.

On Saturday, X user and Tesla enthusiast Chuck Cook discovered that Elon Musk had liked a post that said Tesla cars would run a scaled-down, quantized version of the Grok model that would use the vehicle’s local computing power. After Cook mentioned this, Elon Musk said that Tesla’s cars may have the largest available inferential computing power in the world – as long as the onboard AI computers can run Grok models.

It’s unclear what applications Grok will have in Tesla vehicles, but some have noted that it could replace Tesla’s current voice control system. Elon Musk mentions this and also says that Grok’s SuperPrompt context window may have a 25,000-character limit and that the model will prioritize getting live content from X.

It is also reported that xAI also plans to provide an application programming interface (API) for Grok, and the model is also expected to have audio and image recognition capabilities.

Elon Musk previously announced that Grok will be available to X’s Premium Plus subscribers, which start at $16 per month (currently about RMB 117). It’s also the company’s first officially released software product after Elon Musk founded OpenAI’s competitor xAI a few months ago. On Saturday, xAI and Elon Musk officially announced Grok, with the software now available to Premium Plus users of the X and detailed on the company’s website.
